Just saw the great iceberg image. Very very nice, thanks for making this available to wikipedia! -- mkrohn 20:38 Apr 3, 2003 (UTC)

I like the images very much (being a biologist myself)! Just a "formal" question: You are aware that by putting them here, you release the images under the GFDL? You do keep the copyright, of course! You might want to move the copyright notice onto the "image:" page, though (the one you reach when you click on the image). This seems to be the common way at wikipedia, to state the source on the image page, not within the article. Thanks! Magnus Manske 21:34 Apr 3, 2003 (UTC)

I've just found one of your excellent pages- I liked the photos too. Tannin and I have done most of the bird articles, and we have taken to putting a taxobox classification summary on each page (see Great grey shrike). Some of the mammal and plant people have done the same, and I've added boxes to some other articles to get consistency. I don't have the specialised knowledge to add to taxoboxes to your articles. If you think its a good idea, you could give it a try. I'm not a computer person either. I copied an existing taxobox and changed the words. Keep up the good work. jimfbleak 14:32 Apr 10, 2003 (UTC)

Hi Uwe - brilliant albatross pics! jimfbleak 05:27 23 May 2003 (UTC)

I saw you ask on another page about time stamps. If you sign your comments with three tildes "~~~" you get your name, and with four tildes "~~~~" you get your name plus the timestamp. -- Someone else 20:19 24 May 2003 (UTC)

In a moment I'm off to take some more marsupial photos for the day (up at 4:00AM and another 400km round trip - uuugh!) but it will be my pleasure to work with you on giving a final polish to Eel story a little later. Perhaps I should dust off my field guides and write a companion entry on the Australian eels - which as I'm sure you already know, have a rather similar life pattern and were very significant indeed, as prior to the introduction of northern hemisphere trout and redfin, they were the dominant species in most Austraian streams. Tannin

Uwe, I gather from my on-line reading that there are about 15 Anguillidae species, and that all (?) the northern hemisphere ones are catadromous, but there is some vagueness about the southern ones. From my local sources, however, I discover that at least all 4 Australian species are also catadromous, and spawn somewhere in the Coral Sea or, in the case of Aunuilla bicolor, off Sumatra. So my question is, am I safe in saying that all the anguillids do this? Thanks -- Tannin

Sorry, Tony, I do not know that. I will work on it. Maybe in the meantime you can go to the database of a student who was once in our lab, now a big player: http://www.fishbase.org with info on 27 000 species so far. You can also become a cooperator there (I am no 350)

best greetings "sailor" Kils 15:26 1 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Thanks 'Sailor'. For the moment I found a workaround - instead of saying "like all" or "like most" I just vaguely said "like other freshwater eels". It would be the easiest thing in the world to develop a serious interest in fish. But (darn it!) there are only so many hours in the day and I'm up to my eyeballs in birds and mammals already. Not to mention the plants, aircraft, and modern history I've been neglecting of late. I think I need to be triplets. But I'll come back to this question, eels have always seemed to me an especially interesting fish. As a child, I used to really enjoy eating them fresh-caught - much tastier than trout, which (in my opinion) is rather bland and over-rated - but now that I know how far they have to swim and how long it takes one to reach maturity, I don't think I would anymore. Best -- Tannin

--- Hallo Toni, you are right. Especially the glassels are fascinating. We are building with highschool children here in New Jersey "eel ladders", because they get stuck in front of weirs when the are immigrating. The kids hollow a tree and put an old fishernet inside. They climb up inside by the thousands - and we image it with an endocope. The class just won from 2000 entries prize 1 in a visit to our university. We had that all on the web, but the server got lost. Maybe I find the CD with a copy of a magazin article about our work with the children, the I will "wiki-message" it to you - in a hurry "sailor" Kils

Hello, I just added some formatting and some content to the oxygen saturation page you started. I put the Weiss formula into TeX markup, but I don't know exactly what it should look like. Can you double check my changes to make sure I got it right? Also, just make sure I didn't mess things up too badly. Jmeppley 19:21, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I changed the caption for your watercolor on the bioluminescence page, so it made sense (the other alternative being "bioluminescence in Antarctic krill" --- if I have inadvertently changed the official title of the piece, please rectify my mistake and I apologise. Either way, nice picture.--ZayZayEM 13:30, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Don't worry about it. I do understand German myself, but I prefer English or Dutch communication. So you don't need to talk German unless it's easier for yourself. Mgm|(talk) 12:17, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

  • It's not common practice to leave frozen versions in the article namespace and besides /Temp pages, subpages aren't encouraged either. I've moved the page into your namespace and protected it (it's at User:Kils/Antarctic krill), but be advised you won't be able to edit it either. Let me know when it can be unprotected. - Mgm|(talk) 15:44, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

Faculty patrons and Virtual University

[edit]

I've moved your Faculty patrons article to Wikipedia:Faculty patrons. Please note that pages concerning subjects internal to Wikipedia belong in the Wikipedia: namespace or, if they are specific to a single user, a subpage in the user namespace—not in the main article namespace. Similarly, Virtual University has also been moved to Wikipedia:Virtual University. Also, please note that subpages are not allowed in the main article namespace. Antarctic Krill FAC

[edit]

Hello again! I tightened up the prose on one of the paragraphs, but I am afraid that biology was never my specialty, and my knowledge on the subject is very low. Because I don't know a lot about the article, I can't help improve it, and I don't think I should support it for feature article because I don't know how comprehensive it is. What is there is great, but I try not to vote on things unless I know something about them. Sorry I can't be more helpful Best Wishes Scimitar 21:00, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Antarctic Krill copyediting

It's a highly informative article, but it remains in desperate need of thorough copyediting. I'll see if I can attend to it soon. Best Regards, El_C 23:48, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

hallo El_C - thank you for the fast work, very helpfull. We would like to keep the animations, we were very often complimented just because of those. If we do not get feature status because of that that is ok with us. keep up with the fine work for wikipedia Uwe Kils 03:25, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

Glad to help, Uwe! I also hope you are able to keep them, I find them to be very instructive. Comments

[edit]

Hey there, Kills. Your work on Antarctic krill is quite commendable, and I have made a superficial revision of it. At this point, I think you should expand it a bit further, as there are still some gaps on the article. After that, I sincerely wouldn't mind doing an extensive revision of it. I do believe that it might get featured; if not now, at least in the near future. Cheers. --Sn0wflake 01:43, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello, Uwe Kils. I'll be reviewing your FAC (Krill, I think?) soon. Thanks for your patience! Flcelloguy 02:51, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Re:Krill

[edit]

Hi Uwe!

I agree with El_C above, what the krill article is in great need of is copyediting. My knowledge about krill is really meager; however, since you're asking so kindly, I'll modestly try to help out. The Image:Kilsheadkils.jpg was just a merge from antarctic krill head, which I agree with Weyes is not notable. As a first step in helping out, I have created the Image:Filterkrillkils2.gif, since the black areas of Image:Filterkrillkils.gif gave me epileptic shocks, even though I do not suffer from epilepsy.

Regards. --Salleman 04:22, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

PS. Is Image:Kilsheadkils.jpg a section of an image of equal quality of an entire krill? In that case, upload it! It could very well become a Featured Picture!

I have already proofread it. :) It did need quite a bit of work. I found it a most interesting and informative article. Well done, Uwe Kils! El_C 05:15, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Moreover, I have uploaded a version of this image instead of the poorer quality image found there before. If you disagree to GFDL it, you can easily change back to the previous version. If you agree, you should definitely make it a Featured picture candidate. --Salleman 06:48, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Academic board review and peer review diffs

[edit]

Thanks for your comments, Uwe. I have responded to them here. I wish to congratulate you on the peer review diff. But also, as I mention in my response, I think it is important to note which academic board reviewed which peer review article section, so I wonder which one it was in this case (?). In the future, then, I am of the opinion it should be noted specifically for the benefit of the researcher/reader. Once again, well done! Best Regards, El_C 07:55, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The Pleopods can do that?
Strong support for Krill eye. Wow. *** Too much weird sex! Not in the articles I edit, though definitely in ones that you do(!). Let me quote you: In the typical way of all euphausiaceans, the male attaches a sperm package to the genital opening of the female. For this purpose, the first pleopods of the male are constructed as tools. Yes, I recall some of those issues you raised on the mailing list (which I noticed from links on your RFA). What I was wondering, though, is how the academic board's peer review certificate/notation for the diff can be authenticated (let say, a Wikiversity affiliated certificate would do the trick). Does that make sense? *** I find your Virtual University article to have some interesting and promising potential, but I voted to move it to your user space because it appears to be a policy proposal rather than a guide to using Wikipedia. So, I think that, as such a policy proposal, it would be best to draw people into from there first it so as to be able to get it effectively towards that stage. And as I also said, as per collegues outside of Wikipedia, it of course works the same way. I'm pleased to hear you are getting positive responses from other shcolars around the world. That 's encouraging. Keep up the good work! Yours, El_C 13:04, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I always tried to encourage wiki editors to give their full name and communications and credentials, especially I asked scientists, but they all declined. We can not understand that, also not the explanations they gave. Maybe it takes some more months and media coverages to get peoples trust. An academic board should really be with names and back trackable to the field and reputation of the members. The krill article has been reviewed by experts from Norway, Germany, Danmark, Australia and USA - all found you all have done a great job. I just asked another colleague in Norway to do it again in a week, also translate more to Scandinavian languages (thats where my roots are). I could put the Virtual university brainstorming also on one of our web servers, like ecoscope.com, but we want it in the middle of international discussions (but only if wanted). We think great luctures can also develop if done in a community way (now every professor does her thing, and for high tuition). I still think it would be great within Wikipedia, as it is long the biggest educational motion ever. I am eager to see what the future brings - we got a price for the things we did on free education for the havenots, my students did great things on the web very early - so we feel obliged to share our university education and possibilities - lets communicate accross all boarders and ages Uwe Kils 16:05, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, absolutely, I am all for international and interdisciplinary communication and copperation. That sounds very encouraging. The thing with having a record of who reviewed what is not related so much to scientists as yourself. I trust you. But like yourself, I'm thinking about the future: I am concrned that there are more questionable psuedo or quazi scientists out there who may wish to advance unsceintific theories, and who may say an academic review board process had taken place, when in fact, it hasn't (or was, let say, reviewed by their students rather than peers). This is why, in that sense, future standardization is important. Of course, I meant no slight towards yourself; the fact that several of the 'students' you list on your page are peers now, speaks for itself, I think. Yours, El_C 16:34, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
the reader should have the possibility to juge on her own how much the scientist is suited for the field, following independent sources like this and faculty pages. Just to google for the name is not jet very helpfull, because most of the sci material is behind passwords of expensive magazines or not on the web jet. Uwe Kils 16:47, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)

Just a notice that I have reset the new hi-res image you recently uploaded as per your request. You can now modify it as you see fit. Best regards, El_C 15:46, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I do not. Is it any good? I don't really like using instant messengers (long and somewhat uninteresting story). But I will send you an email soon (I have to go out now), or in the meantime, feel more than free to email me. All the best, El_C 16:53, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I recieved your email, Uwe. Thank you so much for the very warm words. I have responded to it just now (answering also some of the items you left on my talk page before I had to step out). I hope to hear back from you soon. Yours, El_C 22:47, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

An image request

[edit]

Uwe, how about putting Abb 2 from [1] (the schematic view of krill) into the Krill article? It'd be great if you could donate that image to Wikipedia; we could explain so much better what all these technical terms for the various parts of krill anatomy mean with such an image. Don't worry about translating the legends, I can take care of that once the image in on Wikipedia. Could you do that, please? Lupo 08:23, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

compound eye 2

[edit]

Hi Kils,

Well as you have seen, it looks like Mark has beaten me too it and already nominated your Image:Krilleyekils.jpg on WP:FPC - and it looks like it is very popular too. I'm guessing you didn't intend to vote 'neutral' but rather make a 'comment', although there really is no reason why you should't 'support' if you wanted to.

One other thing, at the moment the picture doesn't have a clear copyright tag on the image description page. From the comment there, it looks like you intend to license it as GFDL, but it would be good if you could add an explicit {{GFDL}} or {{GFDL-self}} tag to it. -- Solipsist 17:54, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I put the gfdl tag - I also uploaded high resolution images to amphipod and copepod and icefish http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Icefishuk.jpg but when you click in the image or the high res link the old small images come up - any sugggestions? Uwe Kils 18:12, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)
You might be being plagued by image caches. At the moment, I see a version which is 1536 x 1024 pixels, whilst the smaller version from January was about 320 x 240. -- Solipsist 18:23, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
And just now, click on the image gave me the previous small version... reloading the browser page with <CTRL>-F5 got it back to the big one. The file size in the image history looks about right for the larger version. To avoid confusion over licensing, you should probably remove the 'High Resolution copyrighted version...' line too. -- Solipsist 18:36, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
if I click in the icefish image or the high res link it jumps to the 500 pixel image, same with the amphipod and copepod - I cleared all cache Uwe Kils 18:51, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)
Well I'm fairly sure that you have got the larger version of the icefish uploaded, even if you are not seeing the right result. What browser are you using?
When I follow the link to the full size version I get to this page which is the page to press <CTRL>-F5 (on Firefox, and I think it is the same on Internet Explorer, but it might be <SHIFT> and click on the reload icon in the toolbar)
There are also some server caches on Wikipedia's side. I don't really know how to control these, but modifying the purge link near the top of WP:FPC, you might try following this purge link
safari on mac osx Uwe Kils 19:34, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)
Ahh, I can't help there. Curiously a quick web search doesn't throw up anything concrete. But you can't be alone, so 'how do you reload the image cache on Safari' would be a good question for the Village Pump. -- Solipsist 20:01, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Want to take a look? Catch my errors! I could use a fact check... :-) Not being a specialist, I had to stay at a pretty general level (ok, that's also because it's an article subsuming 86 species). I think you could probably add some detail and/or factual corrections. Just keep in mind that this is not about Euphausia superba, but on krill in general. I'm also planning to write a krill fishery article based on the (Nicol 1997) reference given in the article. Do you know of a more recent survey that is available on-line? Lupo 20:23, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Lupo, I saw that already, you did a great job, I found a typo, will look at it more. My field is really E. superba and herring but I will try. For Fisheries Inigo Everson in GB knows and has a lot. I wrote him already to add or send me for inclusion. It is fun to work with you together ;-) Uwe Kils 20:30, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Uwe, I've just done some minor edits to your article on krill. Your userpage is great by the way. Good luck getting articles and pictures featured. I'll talk to my boyfriend about putting articles up in Spanish as he is fluent. Nice to meet you, --Silversmith Hewwo 16:59, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Moving images to Commons

[edit]

Hi Uwe!

I'd be happy to help with the moving of the images (great photos, btw). However, I'd need your assistance as well. Could you make a list of those images you want to be copied? There are two main requirements for content on the Commons:

  • It has to be potentially useful to the Wikimedia projects. This excludes purely personal photos (children, students etc.).
  • It has to be under a free license. This excludes fair use content.

If you could sort out those files which meet those requirements, I'll copy them over. I'll use the image description pages that are there, so you may want to look over them again (the page you get to when you click on an image).

Dank & Gruß, Eloquence* 11:50, Jun 18, 2005 (UTC)

  • Well, I took a look at it, and did some basic grammar and word use editting. However, there are a few places where I didn't know for sure what you were saying. Because my biology knowledge is limited, I didn't fix those spots, as my interpretation might be wrong. I hope what I did helps, and best wishes. --Scimitar 20:33, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello Kils

[edit]

Just would like to state that i have very much enjoyed being involved in a project of this nature. To see the speed of co-operation between various people was (Uwe, Lupo and Salleman and all others) fantastic. It was a complete buzz to go off researching about a scientific subject and coming to some understanding and appreciation of a creature that i would have no knowledge or interest in otherwise. I would like to say that it takes a damn good teacher to get others interested in what they teach and i for one, if only in a rudimentary and general way have found the subject of Krill and sorrounding issues of ecology and environment fascinating. I think that says a lot about your willingness to let others participate in something which you obviously have great knowledge in and could easily have been a lot less humble with. At some point i will put up some informtion on my home page so at least people know a little more about me. Am going to try to extend the article on Ice-algae so any info you may have would be good. I hope the article on Antartic Krill gets featured as i think it is now very good.

Wikiversity sounds like a good idea but will need more time to go through the proposal (not too sure what help i could be).

Once again thanks Uwe! Yakuzai 22:50, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My pleasure to support the article -- it deserves to be featured (as much of your work here does). It's a real pleasure to know that scientists like you take Wikipedia seriously, and that laymen (women?) like me can contribute to sophisticated articles like this. Commons pictures

[edit]

Hi,

I just saw the list of images you put on my user page. I'll be in Korea for a few days, but I'll work on it when I get back. I think Antarctic krill is looking excellent, by the way. I personally liked having all the images in the article the way they were, but I guess everyone's taste is different.

One more thing: I read somewhere that you wrote that I proposed Wikiversity. This is not true. I've worked on the proposal recently and I'm trying to help make this happen, however, the original idea has been around quite a while before my own involvement, as has the Wikiversity project on Wikibooks. Much credit goes to User:Maveric149, but I'm not sure who originally proposed it. If you write that I proposed Wikiversity people might get angry at you or me, so please correct this :-)

I believe that Wikiversity should only be started as an official Wikimedia project once we have specialized software for test development and certification.--Eloquence*

Hello Uwe. It would be a joy to contribute to both articles that you mentioned.

Two questions:

1. do you or your colleagues have any pictures of exuvaie that you would like to upload to illustrate the short article on Exuvia ? It doesn't matter if it is a picture of insect, arachnid or crustacean exuvia.

2. Will you be expanding the article on Antarctic Paradox at some point in future? I think that could be an interesting article.

Thank you Yakuzai 21:31, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hallo Yakuzai! Great! Yes, I just searched the slide out, my slide scanner is down IEEE!!! interface - horrible - have to go to a friend, have a beatifull exuvia from krill taken under water, all details visible. And I will work on the Paradox - take care Uwe Kils 21:40, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

Edit Counter

I use the counter that Kate built, it's on her site. "Kils" has a total of 2827 edits (on en), and another 932 on de!

Plug your name in and you get this: http://kohl.wikimedia.org/~kate/cgi-bin/count_edits?user=Kils&dbname=enwiki

Just copy that URL onto your page and check your edits any time (but as the page warns, compulsively counting your edits can be fatal.....)

By the way, I like your herring too!  :) — Catherine\talk 00:52, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Oh, you mean Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits? That's a report that's run manually -- it hasn't been updated since April 27 -- I should be significantly higher in it too. Looks like it was last updated by Clockwork Soul; you might drop a note on his talk page to see if there's a more recent version available. — Catherine\talk 00:58, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi Uwe

[edit]

Just made some grammatical adjustments to the article about your father. He sounds like a very interesting person as are you. It would be great if he would take a serious look at Wikipedia. The more professional scientists we get onboard the better!

As i know that you are trying to get others of your professional standing involved in this project i would like to offer as a member of the public some thoughts for those who are skeptical of such a project.

All too often the general public is left out of contributing to discussions of scientific importance as we are considered by the scientific community in general to be ignorant and unqualified to engage in any meaningful dialogue about scientific issues of importance. If indeed the assumption of ignorance is true then in my opinion it is a fault of the mediums in which scientific knowledge and datum is transmitted i.e. specialist publications, newspapers, television and to a lesser extent radio. These mediums offer no chance of a dialogue to develop between the general public and the specialist scientist. Instead they are in the case of T.V., newspaper and radio the transmitters of spoon fed facts that we have no control over and renders arbritrary those facts in relation to the world we live in.

However with a medium such as the internet and a project such as wikipedia their thus arises a new dynamic between the learned and the layman in that a person with no knowledge of a specialist subject can enter into a dialogue with a specialist and comment on what has been written offering advice to elucidate and make clearer the subject for the general reader. The empowerment that is garnered from this relationship cannot be underestimated as it can have in my opinion many side benefits such as a less alienated relationship to scientific knowledge, a greater appreciation of the information being conveyed, a willingness to actively learn more about the subject you have been involved with.

If scientists truely want to engage with the public and have what they say be understood then they must actively get involved in having a dialogue with them, Wikipedia in my opinion and experience to date is a great opportunity to do this. Yakuzai 1 July 2005 00:36 (UTC)

Question on the exoskeleton of krill

[edit]

Uwe, I just noticed that I had written in the krill article "The larvae grow and molt multiple times during this process, shedding their rigid exoskeleton and growing a new one whenever it becomes too small. Smaller animals molt more frequently than larger ones." This is in the section on the life-cycle. Upon re-reading, this strikes me as patently false. Surely the first few larval stages of krill do not have an exoskeleton and therefore do not molt. From what stage on do they have an exoskeleton? They do have one in the furcilia stages (or so I infer from [Kn84]). Do they already have one in the calyptopsis stages? As metanauplii, they don't seem to have one yet—at least the image doesn't look like they had one... Lupo 06:27, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

even the nauplius has an exosceleton and molt, as all stages have/do, like in all crustaceans.
PS in Wikipedia they did not like our motions for a "Virtual University" and courseware, we got an offer from here http://kils.pageout.net and mount some wiki pages into it - it is supposed to become a teaching insitution for third world countries and as supplement for not so rich students ( http://wikinfo.org/wiki.php?title=Virtual_University ) - thank you for your help making our bio-babel better understandable Uwe Kils 13:32, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

On your Virtual University Course

[edit]

Hi Uwe,

you mentioned that you wanted to mount some wikipedia pages into your course at the McGraw-Hill Virtual University. Just let me point out that linking to Wikipedia articles is fine, but copying Wikipedia content would not be ok, because McGraw-Hill's copyright statement (Accessed from the "Terms of use" link at the bottom of your page there) conflicts with the GFDL. They write:

The McGraw-Hill Companies has the right to use all material entered into these Web pages (other than third-party material transmitted through private electronic mail) in any of The McGraw-Hill Companies' print or electronic publications.
Yes, if Wikipedia content is copied onto their pages, they may do that (just like they may do without it having been copied to their site), but only if they follow the GFDL: publish it together with a copy of the text of the GFDL and credit the authors. However, I would personally be very careful to enter any text into that web site: they are not clear whether by entering text you automatically assign the copyright to McGraw-Hill, or what.
Except for making one hard copy print of limited portions of the McGraw-Hill Information on an ad hoc basis, or downloading as expressly authorized by The McGraw-Hill Companies, McGraw-Hill Information may not be reproduced, transmitted or distributed without The McGraw-Hill Companies' permission.
For Wikipedia content copied onto their web pages, they cannot make such a restriction. Once GFDL, always GFDL.

If you copy stuff to which you hold the copyright (such as your images, or the texts you uploaded onto Wikisource) onto McGraw-Hill's web site, that would be ok. You would, at that moment, double-license your work: you'd grant McGraw-Hill the aforementioned rights, but McGraw-Hill still has no way to prevent people from redistributing the GFDL versions posted at Wikipedia or Wikisource. However, any new information posted to their website (and not previously released under the GFDL somewhere else) might be lost for the GFDL world (as I said above, they're not clear whether posting to their web site constitutes a transfer of copyrights). Lupo 16:26, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Hallo Lupo! thank you for your discussion. I have not even looked at the rights section, also not mounted any copyright sensitive material on their server - just wanted to test the system. We planned to mount a Virtual University within Wikipedia, but the pages were put for deletion http://wikinfo.org/wiki.php?title=Virtual_University . As you know I mounted some here on the German proposal project http://de.wikiversity.org/wiki/Ozeanographie/kurse/ but we do not know if it will survive or others will join. I could leave everything on my university or other servers, but the ideas of free content and no password I like a lot and allways promoted. Maybe the Wikiversity proposals will break through on day. Right now I only link to our fine works on Wikipedia, and later we can take all from McGraw to Wikibooks, maybe. Thank you again Uwe Kils 16:51, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Wow. I was amazed to see your gallery at commons, particularly the Salmon. One minor suggestion. Can you use the following code instead of the current image syntax?

[[Image:Salmonlarvakils.jpg|thumb|left|500px|[[Salmon]] fry hatching - the larva has grown around the remains of the yolk - visible are the arteries spinning around the yolk and little oildrops, also the gut, the spine, the main caudal blood vessel, the bladder and the arcs of the gills]] <gallery> Image:Icefishuk.jpg Image:Salmoneggstotkils.jpg Image:Tomopteriskils.jpg Image:Amphipodredkils.jpg Image:Ctenophora.jpg Image:Vikingshipkils.jpg </gallery>

This code will render like the following.

Salmon fry hatching - the larva has grown around the remains of the yolk - visible are the arteries spinning around the yolk and little oildrops, also the gut, the spine, the main caudal blood vessel, the bladder and the arcs of the gills

krill on mainpage in Danmark today

[edit]

Hi Uwe! I better point out that my edits on Antarctic krill as a matter of fact was just of the menial copyedit kind. I am really not very knowledgeable about oceanography. I must say that I can't find Antarctic krill on da:Forside; however, I see that the article will be on the main page tomorrow. Congratulations on that one, the Antarctic krills and you sure deserve it!

Moreover, I (a Swede) will most likely make many silly mistakes if I try to translate to Norwegian, even if I read it fluently. With caution, I might be able to help out with a paragraph or two, though. I'll see what time I'll get to spare.

Regards. Salleman 16:13, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS. If you happen to know anything about elves in German folklore, please flesh out on that one. ;D

Hi Uwe

[edit]

Hi Uwe (that sounds weird, do you pronounce "uwe" the same as "you"? :-)) Congratulations on the Danish Featured Article! The wiki project is unbelievable project. There are no national barriers or petty competition, it's just a collect piece of human knowledge. I don't really frequent the Featured Article voting forum, as I'm only in Yr 10 and although I'm good at english, I haven't really got time to go through an article. But your krill article struck me as very well laid out, I think all wiki articles should have at least that amount of photos - illustration is so essential IMO. I love the photo of krill meat!

I'm glad I was able to fix a little spelling mistake on your userpage, could have happened to anyone though so don't worry.

See you around wiki! --Fir0002 23:10, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

Pic of the Day

[edit]

Hi Uwe,

Just to let you know that your photo Image:Krilleyekils.jpg is up for Pic of the Day on the 3rd of September. As this will be a weekend, it will probably also appear on the MainPage. If you get a chance, can you check/correct/improve the associated caption at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/September 3, 2005. In particular I used the phrase 'disproportionately large' to describe the eye, as this seemed more appropriate than 'massive' in the context of the short caption description. Hopefully this isn't an error. -- Solipsist 10:33, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ecoscope

[edit]

I came across the ecoSCOPE article from a "cleanup" page, but I'm afraid the article is so confusing that I couldn't figure out how to clean it up. For one thing, there are so many pictures that it formats very poorly, making the text hard to follow - how about removing a couple of them? Mostly, though, I'm afraid the writing is quite unclear. Is this a device only suitable for use with herring, or is it a general underwater-observation? If it's general, why do the first paragraphs talk only about herring? - DavidWBrooks 19:52, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deine Artikel bei Wikisource

Hallo Uwe.

Precisions needed on the Iceberg image

[edit]

On International wikisource, some (myself included) are trying to precise the copyright situation of the iceberg image, and of its parts. A quick look at the image page answered my first question; I have another one : is the other picture you used in the photomontage yours? (the one that's upside down) --Kcyclopedist 00:59, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I found [this image], and [this one], that seem to match, can you confirm they are yours?
Sorry for the edit fever, I have to explain how I found the links : I just performed a search on image google with the words 'iceberg kils', and 'show only large images' I got 2 or 3 thumbnails with broken links; I then copied the address to web.archive.org, and after multiple tries bumped on the matching pics. Since I found the pics by using your name, I guess they're yours, but I need confirmation --Kcyclopedist 04:53, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hello,
I see you've already been contacted regarding the wikisource iceberg logo. At oldwikisource:Wikisource talk:New Wikisource logo there has been an ongoing discussion regarding the use of the logo. The situation is that because the copyright of the iceberg image is owned by yourself, & only released to WS under GDFL, the Wikimedia foundation is unable to use the image for merchandising/advertising/etc. Therefore there have been calls from a relative few, very vocal & active, users to use another image for the logo (for which the copyright would be held by the foundation). It seems that the only way to keep the iceberg logo (which personally I much prefer to any of the others proposed) for the long-term is for you to transfer your copyright to the foundation - thus removing the main reason for a change. I would therefore ask you to consider doing this and, if you decide to, publicising this on oldwikisource:Wikisource:New Wikisource logo. Thank you, if you have any questions please let me know. AllanHainey 14:34, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kils,

My name is Fernanda Viégas and I have been studying Wikipedia for a while now (you can see a paper I published on the subject here). I would like to ask you a few questions about your activities as a Wikipedia "photographer." I am fascinated by the pictorial side of Wikipedia and it would be great to hear about this community from one of its members. Would you be available for an email interview? Thanks, Fernanda.

Could you add what year's data (or what years were averaged) this image used to the image description page. It seems this must have been from a cold year as it doesn't show ice melting of the Alaska north coast. Rmhermen 17:19, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't, feel free to revert my changes. At least I might have given you some inspiration for a future update you'd perhaps like to perform. Greetings from across the Atlantic. --Tim

License tagging for Image:Schmidt.pdf

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Schmidt.pdf. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 14:06, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Commons

[edit]

Hallo Kils,

I am Siga in the German Wikipedia, Commons and the Greek Wikipedia but I don't have an account here. I want to use your photos of the article exuvia. But because they are not in Commons, I have them to transfer there first. I will do this mentioning the source and keeping the GNU-Rights. But perhaps you will do this yourself. I created allready an article exuviae in Commons in the category Arthropoda.

I think it will serve your interests best, if from today I will wait one week. So if in that time you didn't put the pictures yourself, I will do that for you. If you don't agree, leave me a note here. Thanks a lot Siga --84.158.235.216 07:31, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moin Uwe!

Fair use rationale for Image:Krill-FA-MP.png

[edit]

Image:Krill-FA-MP.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Hello,

SVG version, waiting for contributions to make it look like the old one.

In order to better illustrate the article Crabeater Seal, I used your Image:CrabeaterSealSkullSchematic.png to make a SVG version. But the license you used (GFDL) is problematic since I want to print this picture for a club in witch I participate, and without a license like Creative Commons, I'm not able to do that without printing all the GFDL license.

So, can I release Image:Lobodon carcinophaga teeth.svg with the licenses “GFDL + CC-by-sa-3.0” (or, better, CeCILL or GPL instead of GFDL)? Thank you.

To reply, please leave me a message on Commons, because I'll receive an e-mail when a new message is posted.
Thanks again. Diti (talk to the penguin) 23:12, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Gelpke.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Thank you for uploading File:Gotthilfhempelkils.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 07:21, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kils, every account can be used by only one person, you can't have an account that is used by two persons or by a group of persons. Those are called "role accounts" and get blocked. --Enric Naval (talk) 16:46, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Kils, Wikipedia is published under a license that requires us to track every single contribution back to a single person. If an account is shared, that can break our copyright terms. Thus, when we find an account being shared, even innocuously, we block it. You can get unblocked by promising never ever to share the account. Please change your password and don't give it to anybody else. Additionally, I urge you to read our conflict of interest policy and follow the good advice there. It will save you a lot of trouble. Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

User promises not to share account. You may have your secretaries register their own accounts. If you are away you can email them and ask them to post on your behalf, as long as the openly declare what they are doing, and scrupulously avoid joining you in the same conversation to create the false appearance of consensus. You and your secretaries represent only one "vote" when you talk about issues related to your organization. I am also concerned about your editing of topics close to you. Please read WP:COI and Business' frequently asked questions (though you appear to have an organization instead of a business) and take care not to run afoul of community norms. Thank you

  2. Any editing by students or secretaries from his computer or office or otherwise under his control is considered editing by him. He is assumed to be in control of the activities in his domain, and is responsible for them.
  3. Kils as well as students and secretaries (under his control) are not allowed to edit Uwe Kils, nor any Wikipedia article about any of Kils projects, institutes or businesses, except to remove material potentially defamatory to a living person or to revert obvious vandalism. The users may however make suggestions via talk pages.
  4. Kils as well as students and secretaries are not allowed to participate in any article for deletion discussion related to the above articles, but may make comments on the talk page, for instance, to suggest additional sources.
  5. Any editing by other parties is to be done via their own accounts. Kils is not to share any accounts with anybody else. (Added by Jehochman Talk at 18:18, 7 December 2009 (UTC))[reply]
  6. The spirit of these restrictions is that Kils will follow best practices of WP:SOCK and WP:COI.

Should the above restrictions be violated, Kils may be blocked for suitable duration by any uninvolved administrator. Jehochman Talk 13:42, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am still blocked because of user mikki joergensen on our network. She asked often that you erase her account Uwe Kils 15:48, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I found an autoblock and cleared it. Can you edit now? Jehochman Talk 16:09, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I added one more point to the above list, to restate what we already had discussion about, which you already agreed to above. If you have any questions, please ask me or another administrator for advice. Better safe than sorry. Jehochman Talk 18:18, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

we admitted already that my former students and professors sometimes edited pages of others crosswise. we did not know that this is not allowed in wikipedia. they all learned from me and we all have a similar style, not using capitals on computers. passwords are something for the military, we are used to work together, that was one ingredient for our unbelievable success worldwide. we promised already to split up all accounts and install new passwords. behind each name are real persons, they all can make an own account. you can delete all - now you have even my account blocked again. Uwe Kils 09:53, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Note that the checkuser results suggested that all of the edits made from "former students" were made from the same IP and same computer. Are you sure you are being up front about all of this? OhNoitsJamie Talk 15:55, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hallo! We all promise to obey to the restrictions. I took the fish in my signature away. Sorry about the confusion. None was a sockpuppet, all were individual persons. Some names were used by several persons. We did not know that this was not allowed. We will split the accounts up, all with individual passwords. can some editor please erase all accounts but mine. I can still not edit, there opens a window that Mikki Joergensen is still blocked. She tried 4 times to get her account closed. Best wishes Uwe Kils 08:33, 8 December 2009

We were never sockpuppets. We are individual persons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Studentskils.jpg - Some editors in the English wikipedia treat us like criminals, block us (I am still blocked), want to try to delete the "Uwe Kils" page again. And now we are even forbidden to vote. You call that democracy? I could contact over 20 000 former students all over the planet to vote on different tcpip machines, but that is not my style. Prof Kils, the evidence in the sockpuppet investigation was quite conclusive, so protesting against it is not going to be productive. Even without the confirmation that every one of those accounts was operated from the same computer, the behavioural evidence and language usage was compelling. Accept the findings and move on. You are not currently blocked and there is no autoblock, so you should be able to continue to edit articles, bearing in mind the restrictions on your editing. AfD nomination of Uwe Kils

[edit]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Uwe Kils. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Uwe Kils (3rd nomination). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:06, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. It appears that you have been canvassing—leaving messages on others' talk pages to notify them of an ongoing community decision, debate, or vote—in order to influence Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Uwe Kils (3rd nomination). While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. Please do not post notices which are indiscriminately cross-posted, which espouse a certain point of view or side of a debate, or which are selectively sent only to those who are believed to hold the same opinion as you. Remember to respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large. File source problem with File:Joelgibson.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Joelgibson.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 07:12, 16 December 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Cirt (talk) 07:12, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading File:Krill666.jpg.

Cirt (talk) 23:28, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw your remark on Jimmy Wale's talk page. None of the images on Wikipedia are fully copyrighted. To be reused on other places, the original author have to be attributed. I think the license you may be looking for is GNU Free image license. In addition, you can always make a template which you can add to all your images description. You can see mine as an example (User:Tyw7/license). Thanks! --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 19:02, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Long-term Ecosystem Observatory has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable research project. No independent refs.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. File source problem with File:Nikolausgelpke2.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Nikolausgelpke2.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Kleine Freiheit - 70 year old gaff cutter - or 85 years old? - or 93?, or ...

[edit]

Hej,

your boat on the image Freiheitu.jpg on mediawiki is described as: English: wooden sailing boat Kleine Freiheit - 70 year old gaff cutter - operation: Abenraa - Denmark.
The photo was uploaded in 2003. Is the boat-age updated automatically each year in the file description text?
Another text says: my 85 year old oak Sailing Cutter with an underwater window "Kleine Freiheit", so it looks like not :-(
Should we update the mediawiki description, ie to give the year of building (ca. 1924, if 85 was the age of the boat in 2009) ;-) ? Thx , B Lemeukx 23:25, 26 August 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by B Lemeux (talkcontribs)
